Propranolol-induced Somnambulism: A Case-report in a Patient with Essential Tremor.

چکیده
Essential tremor is a common neurological disorder characterised by postural and kinetic tremor. In the American Academy of Neurology 2011 evidence-based guidelines for the treatment of essential tremor, propranolol and primidone were the only two medications for which Level A recommendations were issued. Both medications are usually well tolerated. We recently prescribed propranolol to a 34-year old woman with essential tremor to alleviate her symptoms and encountered a rare adverse effect, somnambulism. We report the case here and perform a brief review of the literature on beta-blocker-induced sleep disturbance.

Effect of Crocus sativus extracts and its active constituent safranal on the harmaline-induced tremor in mice
Objective(s): Due to unsatisfactory response or intolerable side effects of current drugs, treatment of essential tremor remains inadequate. Thus, we aimed to investigate the protective and therapeutic effects of aqueous and ethanolic extracts of Crocus sativus (saffron), and its active consistent, safranal, on the harmaline-induced tremor in mice. Materials and Methods: To induce tremor, harma...
متن کاملTopiramate Treatment of Essential Tremor in a Patient with Cognitive Deficits
This case report demonstrates a satisfying response to topiramate in a 79-year-old patient with disabling essential tremor in whom propranolol as well as primidone had to be discontinued due to severe side effects. After 28 months of topiramate treatment, a clear decline in Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) could be observed, stressing the use of care in prescribing topiramate in elderly pat...
متن کاملDystonia in a patient treated with propranolol and gabapentin.
We present a 68-year-old patient with essential tremor who was treated with propranolol hydrochloride (80 mg daily) and gabapentin (900 mg daily) after a history of mild success of gabapentin alone in relieving his symptoms. The patient had several daily episodes of paroxysmal dystonic movements in both hands. After reducing the propranolol dose to 40 mg daily, the dystonic movements resolved. ...
متن کاملCoarse Tremor as the Only Sign of Perinatal Hemorrhagic Stroke: A Case Report
Background: Tremor which is the most common abnormal movement in the neonatal period might be a benign condition or the result of pathologic events and is divided into two subtypes, namely fine tremor and coarse tremor. Fine tremor is usually benign and results from some metabolic disturbance, such as hypoglycemia. On the other hand, coarse tremor is an indicator of brain insult and should be r...
متن کاملBeta blockade in lithium tremor.
Practolol, propranolol, and placebo have been tested on an objective test of lithium induced tremor. Both beta-blocking agents produced significantly more tremor than the placebo. It is argued that lithium induced tremor is closer to essential than to physiological tremor.
